CA Sacramento US UU Society of Sacramento 2414 | Great history on UUSS website! Unitarians have been a part of Sacramento since 1868 when the first recorded Unitarian meeting was held here. It was a rough and tumble time back then, but the group of settlers that attended this first meeting persevered and eventually formed the first Unitarian Society of Sacramento. They met in rented halls for almost 50 years before their numbers and resources grew enough to build their own church in 1915. Another 50 years would pass before the Sacramento Unitarians outgrew their wonderful little church in town and put the plans in place to build a new church and Sunday school complex. When the main auditorium was completed in 1960, the congregation moved to its current location on Sierra Boulevard. The school buildings were added the following year and in 1965, they changed their name to the Unitarian Universalists Society of Sacramento (UUSS). |

MA Arlington US First Parish UU 4132 | http://firstparish.info | 2000 | NOTE: I was minister at the First Parish UU Church of Arlington, Massachusetts, from 1969 to 1990. Most notable during my 21-year ministry was the loss by fire of our 1857 meetinghouse in 1975 and the subsequent rebuilding effort. Thus the highly personal account in the final chapters of the book. Its publication was underwritten by the Women's Alliance of the First Parish, using funds from a legacy by the late Marie Schaffer. With this generous backing, we were able to afford an excellent book designer and printing firm, resulting in a really handsome volume. However I confess to having missed a few typos, and I inadvertently failed to include a dedication to the Alliance and to Marie. Advice to future congregational historians: get adequate financial backing, and triple-check the proofs before final approval. Best wishes, Charles Grady, charclaud@fastmail.fm |
